CHAPTER ELEVEN

Kendal watched as Ryan ran across the field, kicking the soccer ball toward the goal. It was only his first practice, but he seemed to take to the game right away. His son seemed in his element, and he wished he'd signed him up years before.

"He looks great out there." Conner was suddenly beside him.

It was a shock to see him. They hadn't talked in over two weeks. Not since they'd shared that single night together. It killed Kendal not to call, but it was easier than fighting his desires when they were together. "Yeah, he does. He seems to really enjoy it."

"Mind if I sit?" Conner shifted almost nervously.

"Nope, go ahead. What brings you to the park today?"

"My nephew, John, is on Ryan's team. My sister couldn't make it, so she asked me to bring him." Conner sat down beside him, wrapping his arms around his knees as he looked out over the field. "The blond kid with the ball now, that's John. He's a year younger than Ryan."

"Wow, I didn't know Jessica's kid was that old, but I guess he would be. I remember Elise going to the baby shower not too long after we married. I know they graduated together." Kendal stretched his legs out. "So, how have you been?"

"Good. I got a job doing some freelance IT work. It gets me out of the house, but I can work my own hours so I don't have to leave Mom for long hours every day. It also allows me to help Jessica with John."

"Her husband's in the military, right?" Kendal stared over the field, watching the boys practice.

"Yeah. He's gone at least a year this time." Conner picked at the grass. "So what is new with you?"

Other than spending every night wishing Conner was in his bed, nothing. "Not much. Work's been hell. I have a huge case coming up in a few weeks that I've had to do a lot of prep for. I haven't really had time for much. Work, come home to Ryan, do the dad thing, then go to bed so I can do it all over again. Ryan leaves Thursday to go with Elise's family to the cabin. He'll miss two days of school, but it's worth it. He needs a few days away."

"That's cool they invite him."

"Yeah, it was a yearly trip we always made as a family, but I flaked this year and forgot. I've got work and can't get away. I might try and drive up on Saturday." Kendal wasn't sure if he wanted to make the long drive or just enjoy the time home alone. Then again, alone time meant think about Conner time, and that was getting very old, very fast.

Conner stretched his leg out, brushing his knee against Kendal's, leaving it there. It was a gentle touch that no one would notice, but it was enough to cause a wave of desire to shoot through Kendal's body. He softly pressed his leg against Conner's, glancing up at him with a smile.
